What is Broadband?

Broadband is a high-speed method of accessing the internet, giving users faster uploads and downloads than were possible via dial-up connections. It also allows for simultaneous use of landline and internet connections.

Broadband involves sending information via electrical signals to and from your computer, using copper telephone wires, wireless frequencies, fiber optic cable or satellite transmission.

What types of Broadband are there?

There are many types of broadband, DSL, VDSL and ADSL (copper products), Fiber Optic, Fixed Wireless (Licensed and Unlicensed), Mobile wireless (Cellphone), and satellite.

What is an ISP?

ISP stands for 'internet service provider'. In other words, your ISP is the company that provides your broadband service often referred to as a broadband provider.

What is download?

Your download speed is the pace at which data (like web pages, music, video content etc) is transferred to your computer. The better your download speed, the faster your internet connection will be. That means that, next to price, it's one of the most important factors when choosing a provider. It is worth noting that all broadband products are advertised with 'up to' speeds. This is because in most cases you will not actually receive the maximum potential speed.

What is upload?

Upstream refers to the direction of Internet traffic which is sent from the user to the Internet.

What is Byte, KB, MB or GB?

A Byte is a measurement of data and the amount you use depends on what you're browsing and how long for. A Kilobyte (KB) is equal to 1000 bytes (measurement for a unit of data). A Megabyte (MB, Meg) is equal to 1000 Kilobytes. A Gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1000 Megabytes.

How do I check my speed?

The State of Wyoming offers a speed test at:  WWW.WYOBBMAP.ORG.  Here you can press the GO button and get your current speeds, and provider.

What is Fiber?

Fiber in broadband refers to the use of fiber-optic cable. This is the use of a glass tube which is used to send network signals and is often used in replacement of a copper cable. Fiber has the advantage of being easily upgradable by only changing the equipment connected at each end and it allows data to be sent at very high speeds.

What is Fiber to the Home (FTTH)?

Fiber-to-the-home, often called fiber to the prem/premises (FTTP) is a technology which is used for providing broadband services to homes and offices. It uses fiber-optic cable to deliver high speed broadband services into the home or business.
